Fishery of Urisa River in West Papua
Abstract
Inland waters in West Papua are endowed with huge diversity. This paper aimed to depict the fish diversity and fishery activities in Urisa River, West Papua, and propose the management for keeping the fish resources sustainably. The study was conducted in 2020 at Urisa River, Kaimana District, West Papua Province, by direct surveying and interviewing the fishers in five stations. The fish samples and kinds of fishing gear were collected from the fishers or local people who fished close to the station. It also calculated the fish production potential. The results showed that eleven fish and a shrimp inhabited in Urisa River, West Papua, were captured using seven fishing gears. The fish production potential was 122.21 kg/ha/year. The recommendation towards keeping the sustainability of fish resources was preserved local wisdom.
